Week 2 - Point of View

--> The Everglades are home to some pretty strange species of flora and fauna. We were walking through the Fakahatchee Strand State Park a while ago and came across this strange specimen. This is two different plants, an Oak tree and a Strangler Fig. The fig is an invasive plant to FL although other species like the Banyan tree are related to it.  In your comment on this blog this week talk about the composition of this photo, the point-of-view, and comment on how a different p-o-v might have made a different type of photo.

  1. I love this picture. It makes me think of Treebeard and Ents.
The POV of looking up makes me feel very small in comparison; it brings to mind the "Big Questions" as well as my significance in the "big picture". I like how even though the picture has the potential to be overwhelming, the light makes it bright and somehow comforting. I feel that if this was taken in a darker setting, with less light exposure, the tree could then take on the scarier more ominous character appearance as seen in movies like Snow White (or any other hostile tree-like imagery). I think that the POV tells more of a story than if it were a straight on POV (like what you see right in front of you) or looking down (because that would have come off as being above nature to me personally). The symmetry of the tree with the leaves also makes it visually pleasing to my eye. And, as I said before, I really like the brightness.

  2. I have taken a few photos of trees from this point-of-view, it always reminds me of a song called "Tall, tall trees". I agree with Jessi, if not for the brightness, the photo might have an ominous feel to it, possibly because of the way the two trees are twisted around another. There is something almost sinister about the way they intertwine. Looking down, you might only see the leaves though, so they might only look like ordinary trees if the point of view were different. A straight on view I think would still give it that sinister twisted look, maybe even more ominous because you wouldn't have the bright glow from above the tree tops. I think photography, as with other art forms is all about perspective and how you personally view something.

  3. I love the position of this photo because you are looking up at it instead of straight on. I think it gives it more detail looking at it in this position as where I think if it was straight on you wouldn't see how intertwined they are. The sky is black and there is few leaves, but I bet this is a huge tree. I would love to see a far away pic to see the difference.

  4. I like how very tall the tree seems. Also the vines looks to be trying choke the lifer from the tree, hense Strangle Fig. The lighting is also well done. It's amazing that in different ways you position your shot how it can change the emotion of the photo. I hope to capture some shots like these of some palm trees near my home tomorrow.

  5. I liked this point of view of these trees. I liked seeing the blue sky through the leaves. I also like the way the sun is shining on the trees. I do agree with the others that if it was darker it would give a more ominous look.

  6. I love the tree from this perspective. I like the down low shooting upward angle that seems to make the tree stretch on almost forever. I also like the bright lighting, though not because it makes the shot more cheerful, because it really shows the textures of the tree. I know that in my opinion showing the texture in this shot would be just as important as the pov it was shot from, this pov brought it all together nicely.

  7. The Everglades have always been a unique region. Being the home of the most rare and endangered species makes this spot an excellent choice to take photos. Every photo has a story behind it. This photo has me curious about what story it holds. The direction of the shot is amazing. For some reason I think it was perfect to shot the photo straight up rather than straight on.

  8. The tree looks very tall in this photo and you can see the other hugging around it all the way up. If you had a different point of view I don't think it would of shown the connect these to trees have to each other. That its just not a part where they are touchen its the whole tree. Also that in this picture the tree seems very very tall. If you took an birds eye view you would of got everything but the tallest in the treat it would of made it seem short. When you think of tree you think their very tall.

  9. Focusing solely on the two plants makes it the power shot that it is – it truly gives it that “Wow!” factor. I certainly wouldn’t find the photo nearly as appealing if other elements were in the shot. The point-of-view provides the viewer with an in-person experience and shows a detailed view of why the Strangler Fig is given its name. If a different p-o-v was utilized, the photo wouldn’t be as captivating. The angle of the photo gives it an artistic feel.

  10. I love nature shots almost as much as people shots. The POV you used makes the photo inviting and warm. The shadows casted by the branches and other plants give the photo depth and tell a story about how the plants grew together.

  11. I really love the point of view of this photo! The angle that this was taken at makes me feel like I am actually there looking up at the tree. I also love the lighting because it is really bright and it only hits the two plants in certain spots. I agree with everyone else that if the image was not bright that it would look ominous. If this had been taken on a cloudy day with dark gray clouds it would make this look really ominous. I think that if this photo had been taken at a different angle that it would not look very interesting. If you had taken the photo straight on you would not be able to see how tall the tree is, and you would not be able to see how the strangler fig is wrapped around the tree as well.

  13. Two things I really notice right away about this photo. The angle enhances the trunk, it kind of looks like fingers grabbing at the tree. Really cool. Another thing is, how big is this tree really? It looks huge by the angle. This angle puts the focus all on the tree. If you were to take a different p-o-v the tree may not have been the focus but the beautiful sky and greenery.
